Stonehenge Campsite review – the closest campsite to Stonehenge for glamping and touring

If you’re looking for a campsite close to Stonehenge or somewhere to go glamping in Wiltshire then we’d recommend checking out Stonehenge Campsite just off the A303. As the name suggests it is within a few minute’s drive of this iconic World Heritage Site and makes for a great base for visiting it, plus the historic desintations of Avebury, Old Sarum and Salisbury. We were invited to stay and carry out a Stonehenge Campsite review during our short break in Salisbury with VisitWiltshire over October half term.

Camping and glamping near Stonehenge

Cutting to the chase, Stonehenge Campsite is one we really liked and would return to in a heartbeat. It was perfect for our multi-generational holiday where my parents were travelling in their motorhome and the girls and I needed camping accommodation that would fend off the autumn chill.

A deluxe motorhome pitch for the Tin Box Grandparents right next-door to our luxury glamping pod was the perfect solution for accommodating us all.

Arriving at Stonehenge Campsite

Finding Stonehenge Campsite is relatively simple but make sure you use the postcode from the campsite’s website (SP3 4TQ) if you are relying on your SatNav.

There is a site with a similar name close by. When you come off the A303 the campsite entrance is the first right, which is obscured until you are on top of it, so approach slowly.

Jeff and Nikki, the super-friendly site wardens, were in the process of improving the signage when we visited. They made us feel very welcome and were extremely helpful throughout our stay, which although short, was very enjoyable.

Facilities at Stonehenge Campsite

Stonehenge Campsite is really well maintained and comes with lots of features to make your stay easy and enjoyable. It’s not at all surprising that it’s won local and national awards.

Shower blocks

Our luxury glamping pod didn’t have its own toilet or shower so the girls and I used the toilet block which was a short walk away. On the outside this looks like a porta cabin but inside it is surprisingly modern. There a small charge of 20p for four minutes of hot water in the showers.

This is donated to the local air ambulance service, so it feels like money well spent getting clean. Top tip: whip off your togs before putting the money in the machine as the timer starts running straight away.

Dishwashing and kitchen facilities

There’s a kitchen area next to the toilet block for campers and glampers with a microwave, freezer, sinks, a washing machine (£5 charge) and dryer (£1 per 10 minutes), as well as books, games and DVDs to borrow.

This is where you’ll find notice boards about things to do in the area and local shops.

Onsite shop

There are eggs for sale in the campers kitchen and a wider range of groceries, including breakfast and barbecue basics, in Reception.

Free wifi

If, like me, you are constantly updating your social media (forgive me, it comes with the job!) then you’ll be pleased to know there’s free WiFi available on site. We had a good signal in our pod, which was close to the campsite’s reception.

Luxury glamping pods

Stonehenge Campsite has six luxury glamping pods sleeping between two and four people. We stayed in the delightfully kitch Fox Pod. This accommodates up to four people in a double bed with a bunk over the headboard and a camp bed.

It is compact so I’d suggest it was most suitable for a family with two adults and up to two young children. I had the double bed to myself while the girls shared the bunk, sleeping top to toe.

Glamping pod facilities

So what comes with a luxury glamping pod? Here’s what we found inside Fox Pod:

• Tea, coffee, sugar, biscuits and a kettle
• Mugs, plastic bowls and plates, and cutlery
• A barbecue set
• A small bin
• A chair
• Bedside tables and lights
• A double bed, camp bed and bunk
• Spot lighting
• An electric fire with two heater settings and flame effect for a cosy feel
• A small fridge
• Spare plug sockets.

Outside we had a small porch and decked area, and our own fenced garden with a picnic table for al fresco dining. There was also porch lighting and a storage box for charcoal.

It’s worth mentioning that there are no curtains over porthole window above the bunk bed. In October when the sun was late to rise this wasn’t an issue. But the girls might have woken up a lot earlier without something covering it in the summer months.

The window also opens outwards so I had to talk to the girls about keeping it closed. They’d not roll out of it but I didn’t want any limbs to dangle in the night.

The beds were really comfy and cosy with proper mattresses and bedding. In the evenings I was just about able to sit at the head of the double bed without my head touching the underside of the kids’ bunk.

Someone taller than me (I’m 5ft 6), might have to sit at the foot of the bed instead. In the summer, the picnic table would have made a great place for socialising after the kids had gone to bed.

Glamping breakfast in bed

One of the brilliant extras you can get while staying in a luxury glamping pod at Stonehenge Campsite is continental breakfast delivered to your door.

This comes in a hamper complete with plates and cutlery, a selection of cereals, pastries, yogurts and fruit. Breakfast hampers can be delivered at a time to suit you and cost £6.50 per person per day.

You can even order chocolates and prosecco or flowers for special occasions.

All weather caravan and motorhome pitches

Stonehenge Campsite has all-weather, gravel pitches for touring vehicles and caravans of all sizes, from RVs to VW campers. Tin Box Grandma and Grandpa had a Deluxe Motorhome pitch.

The all-weather caravan and motorhome area of the site is compact and nicely landscaped. It provided a very comfortable and sheltered hard standing pitch for my parents’ 6.3 metre motorhome.

Their electricity supply came from a 16 amp hookup adjacent to the gravel hardstanding. It also had its own water point and grey water drain. Unfortunately the drain on the pitch was slow to absorb waste water.

We understand that there are a number of improvements planned for this site over the coming months to rectify this issue.

Dog-friendly camping

Tin Box Dog stayed with my folks in their motorhome as dogs are not allowed in any of the glamping accommodation. You can bring your four-legged friend if you are camping too.

here is a dog walk from the site and, if you’re keen, you can trek the 5.5 miles to Stonehenge.

Things to do near Stonehenge Campsite

We spent two days exploring South Wiltshire. This included visits to Salisbury and its gothic Cathedral, Cholderton Charlies rare breeds farm which was a hit with the kids, and Stonehenge.

Touring, glamping and camping prices

Deluxe motorhome pitches cost between £12 and £26 a night for small motorhomes like my parents’ one. Meanwhile the luxury glamping pod costs between £50 and £100 a night.

The price variation is dependant on the time of year you stay. For the standard of the site and accommodation I feel the prices are very competitive.

Stonehenge campsite review – final thoughts

The combination of a cheery welcome from the site wardens, lovely accommodation, a well maintained site and facilities means we’ll not forget Stonehenge Campsite for a long time. In fact it will be top of my list of places to stay should we find ourselves in Wiltshire again soon.
