Family travel inspiration: destinations, accommodation and tips

Sharing is caring!

One of the great things about being part of the family travel blogger community is that I don’t have to look far for inspiration when it comes to destinations, places to stay and advice. If I want to find first-hand accounts of holidaying in the Ardeche with kids, what it’s like onboard a Royal Caribbean cruise ship, or the best castles to explore in the UK, I can usually find what I’m after.

Here are a few of the blog posts I’ve read in the past couple of weeks that I’ve enjoyed and bookmarked for future reference. You might find them handy too.

Family travel inspiration from bloggers in the know

Sarah from Extraordinary Chaos was invited for a day onboard Royal Caribbean’s Navigator of the Seas. Firstly her photography is amazing. Secondly, what a fantastic looking ship. And finally, I couldn’t agree more with her 10 reasons to love cruising. If you’re yet to experience a cruise take a look – you’ll be itching to book one.

From mazes and dressing up to dramatic cliff-top settings, the UK’s castles offer great family days out. Clare from Suitcases and Sandcastles has summed up some of the top UK historic monuments you should see with your family this summer. I’m sad to say I’ve only visited two of them and that was before kids. Must try harder!

I defy you not to be totally chilled out reading and hearing about Penny from Parent Shaped‘s weekend away at Darwin Forest in the Peak District. This is a wonderful part of the UK that we last visited four years ago during the Olympics. If you click through to read this, be prepared for a hot tub, newspaper reading and serious family time.

Croatia is high on our travel bucket list. In fact, Mr Tin Box was recently looking at cruises that incorporate a trip to Dubrovnik. Note to self: I must cultivate this thought. However, I was rather taken with the idea of staying in a posh hut in this beach front resort written about by Jennifer at Kid Friendly Europe 101. It looks fantastic.

Another family travel blogger who’s been relaxing to the max recently is Ting from My Travel Monkey. She’s shared her stay at Villa Pia in Italy where there’s a great sense of community among the guests. It sounds like it has just the right balance between space to chill out as a family and somewhere that you’ll easily find people to chat to and share the experience of this beautiful location.

It’s 10 years since we visited the Ardeche in France as part of a European road trip before kids – I’m not sure where the time has gone. However, my memories of this jaw dropping region as still very fresh in my mind. Sam from Travelling with our kids sums up the things to do with children in the Ardeche perfectly and has given me even more reason to return with my girls.

Cindy from Piccolo Explorer has recently landed back in the UK from a wonderful trip to Bali. If you’re heading there, or want to know why you should, her Snapshots from Bali is essential reading. You’ll find everything from recommendations on where to stay and places to visit, to the best restaurants. And this is a just a snapshot!

If you’re flying long-haul with kids this summer, first I’d like to say ‘good luck’ and second, read this post by Sally at Who’s the Mummy. She’s shared all her top tips for jet lag recovery both at the beginning and end of your travels. I’ll certainly be taking some tips from here the first time we take a long flight with the Tin Box girls.

Now, I was torn on my last recommended family travel read, as Cathy from Mummytravels has written a couple of fantastic posts about her Californian road trip. I was originally going to include a post about her itinerary but then she went and published this enormous list of things to do with kids in San Francisco and I just had to mention it. Tip: you can find the other post linked in this one.

I hope you’ve found some family travel inspiration here. Which destination or tip has got you reaching for your car keys or passport?
